We, the Solace coaching staff, are very excited to award our September Member of the Month to Laura Kaveney Briggs! Laura has been with us for two years and has improved tremendously. A natural athlete, Crossfit didn’t come easy to Laura. Her goal was to be an overall better, stronger athlete so she spent time in the gym everyday focusing on her weaknesses, getting feedback from coaches, and constantly trying to learn new skills and improve upon her technique. Proving the journey to getting better is not a quick and easy. It’s hard work and it’s humbling. Because as Laura mentioned, there is always something to improve upon.
Whether it’s during Crossfit, Body or Barbell class, Laura always has a positive attitude and gives each workout 110%. She has come a long way as an athlete and is still pushing to get better. Name: Laura Kaveney Briggs

How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you get into it? It’s been almost exactly 2 years since I started Crossfit. I had been curious about it for years but was too intimidated to try it. Then a couple people I know ended up joining Solace shortly after it opened. I felt more comfortable giving it a shot at a place where there would be some familiar faces. I signed up for foundations, realized Crossfit was a whole new world of fitness that I had no idea existed, and then immediately committed to a full year membership.
What were your thoughts after your first CF workout? Holy shit, I thought I was in shape but clearly P90X workout videos lead me astray…
What were your goals when joining CrossFit? My main goals were to get stronger and become an overall better athlete. Some of the first tangible goals I set were to be able to do pull-ups and do some workouts RX.
How did you find Solace and what has kept you with us for so long? I found Solace mainly through my friend (Mike Winberg) who had won a free 6 month membership at the opening party. After 2 years, the reason I’m still a member is because of the community as a whole. We’re obviously pretty spoiled here at Solace with how beautiful the space is and the wide variety of class options available to us, but it’s definitely the coaches and members that have made me look forward to coming to the gym every day. I would definitely say that joining Solace has changed my life – some of my closest friends are people I’ve met at Solace and I’m inspired and pushed to my limits every day by the members and coaches here. I’ve learned to love the pain that comes with each workout and knowing that I’m becoming better and stronger every time I step inside the gym.
You have improved tremendously since starting with us. Talk to us about that. When I first started Crossfit, it was very humbling for me. I’ve always been naturally athletic (somewhat). Growing up I was decent at soccer, basketball, softball, tennis, snowboarding….but with Crossfit, I sucked at everything. Nothing came naturally (except double unders for some reason, maybe Asian ninja coordination?) but that was a challenge that really excited me. I’m definitely stronger and more confident than I was when I first started, but I also have a million more goals and things that need improvement.
What or who was the biggest motivator/inspiration? The biggest motivator for me, besides the coaches and other members pushing each other, is probably just the fact that there’s always something that I can get better at. What I love about Crossfit is that once you reach one goal, there’s always another one.
What has been the most challenging part of your journey? Biggest obstacles? The most challenging part of my Crossfit journey has been the mental aspect. At first you look at Crossfit like anything else fitness related and think, okay this is a physical challenge. But I’ve found that the hardest part is being able to voluntarily come to workout when you know at some point in the WOD you’re mentally going to struggle to finish because it hurts and it seems like it’s never going to end. For me, pushing through that mental wall is the biggest obstacle, but in my opinion it’s also the most satisfying and addicting part of Crossfit. That feeling of knowing you were able to keep going when others may have given up.
What changes have you made to your daily life, diet & workout routine that have been the most successful for you? I recently started focusing more on my diet, not because I want to lose weight, but because I want to make sure I’m fueling myself properly to get the most out of my workouts. The RP Strength templates have really helped me eat the right things at the right time so I have more energy and feel better overall.
How has Solace positively affected you both inside and outside the gym? Being a member at Solace and part of the Crossfit community in general has really changed the way I look at women. I love that women in Crossfit aim to be strong so they can do amazing things with their bodies; they’re not trying to please anyone by looking a certain way. Crossfit has also really helped me in other aspects of my active life. I have a lot more stamina than I used to when I play soccer. I’m also confident that I can physically dominate any of the other females (and probably some of the men) on the field if they try to push up on me.
What keeps you motivated? I’m motivated by my weaknesses and seeing all the amazing stuff that other members, athletes and coaches can do.
Biggest achievement at Solace so far? Besides being member of the month (obvi), probably seeing how much I improved in the open this year from last. I had a goal to be able to do all the workouts RX and I did that.
New goal for the coming year? I just want a freaking muscle up!
Something no one at the gym knows about you I went to culinary school a few years ago to learn how to bake, just for shits and giggles.
When you’re not at Solace, where are we most likely to find you? Either at a bar, restaurant, on the soccer field or on the couch hugging my dog and telling him how much I love him while he tries to escape my grasp.
Pre and post workout meal of choice? Pre workout, I go for whole wheat toast with peanut butter. Post workout, which is usually dinner, I like to eat eggs (egg whites with spinach, tomatoes and a little swiss cheese and tabasco….delish)
Favorite WOD/ least favorite WOD Favorite WOD is The Chief because it was the first WOD with a barbell that I ever did RX. And my least favorite is anything with thrusters (especially dumbbell thrusters).
Favorite lift/ least favorite lift My favorite lift is the Snatch. We all know it’s a thing of beauty when you hit that snatch just right. And my least favorite lift is the push jerk.
Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit? It will kick your ass but totally change your life.
Knowing how far you’ve come, if you could give your past self-advice, what would it be? Try to eat healthier, you’ll get more bang for your workout buck if you do.

Last song stuck in your head: Despacito, most people are so over that song but for some reason I still like it, and usually when it’s stuck in my head I’m singing the parody version I made up called “My Burrito”

Favorite hidden gem spot/restaurant in NYC: Sam’s, it’s a really non-descript Italian restaurant across the street from my apartment. The owner is really friendly and they always give us free drinks so I love them.
Favorite healthy snack: I don’t know that I eat healthy snacks….

Someone you could party with for a night dead or alive, who and why? Johnny Depp in the 90’s when he was dating Kate Moss and they did crazy shit
