We, the Solace coaching staff, are very excited to award our August 2016 Member of the Month to Amoy Brock.
Amoy has been with us at Solace since February. Once shy and timid, Amoy is now a constant in the Solace morning classes and takes full advantage of all Solace has to offer. Besides CrossFit, she also takes Sculpt and Yoga, sometimes back to back! Amoy always has a positive attitude and the coaches love having her in class.
Coach Cindy, a Solace yoga instructor, remembers when she first started venturing into CrossFit classes, Amoy was always incredibly welcoming. “I would never have guessed that she was shy or timid. She was so friendly, helping me change plates on the bar, and encouraging me when I had little to no clue what I was doing with a barbell.”
Amoy has improved greatly since starting at Solace. Once unable to complete the workouts, she’s now using heavier weights, taking on RX workouts and even doing double unders! Tell us a little bit about yourself:
I’m a Queen’s girl, born and raised in Jamaica, NY. But my family comes from St. Martin and it’s like a second home to me. I attended Howard University (the real HU). I have an older sister and younger brother, but people tend to think I’m the baby. As chatty as I am, I’m the quiet sibling. My favorite time of the year is football season, die hard Giants fan!. Nothing makes me happier than settling in for a Sunday afternoon game with my dog – decked out in matching Giants jerseys of course!
How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you get into it? I tried CrossFit very briefly a few years ago but I got sick and had to stop. When I got cleared to workout again, I knew I wanted to revisit CrossFit because the WODs looked badass! I started at Solace in February of this year.
What were your thoughts after your first CrossFit workout? My first workout was comprised of burpees and snatches. Omg, I was wrecked and exhausted but I felt crazy powerful. I was so proud of myself. I wanted more but was also freaked out about the next workout. I came back the very next day.
What were your goals when joining CrossFit? I wanted and also needed to feel like my old self again. Prior to getting sick, I was an athlete and a dancer. I joined CrossFit because I figured it was the best way for me to jump back into the game. My goals are to get stronger and faster, to whoop it up in the process.
You also take Sculpt and yoga. How has that helped you in your CrossFit and fitness journey? Taking Sculpt and yoga has helped tremendously with my core strength. These classes hit little muscles I would otherwise ignore. It’s intense and specific, yet invigorating all at once. I LOVE taking Sculpt and going right into yoga – no seriously everyone should try it!
How did you find Solace and what has kept you with us for so long? A few of my coworkers had been to Solace and suggested I check it out when I expressed my interest in trying CrossFit again. I enjoy the workouts and seeing results, but I keep coming because of the people. I cherish and admire my Solace family. Solace has become my playground and safe place. I’m not a happy camper on days I don’t get to come in.
You’ve improved tremendously since starting with us. Talk to us about that and what keeps you motivated. I’m so grateful to have my health back. I went from running a half marathon to struggling to stand on the train. I know what it feels like to want to get up and go but your body just won’t let you. It’s something I don’t take for granted. I really try my best to make the most of each day and each class.
What has been the biggest obstacle in your journey? I’m working on being patient and kind to myself. I am my own biggest critic and have high (sometimes unrealistic) targets for myself. I still struggle with being satisfied and appreciating the work I’ve put in, although I know I’m doing my best.
What do you feel has been your biggest improvement? I can do double unders! Ok…like 12 but I can do them! That is the one movement I was determined to get early on. Pull ups here I come!
How has Solace positively affected you in your personal and professional life? I’ve met so many new friends. I’m gone to many more brunches and happy hours since joining Solace. I’m a morning person but I find starting my day at Solace sets me up to be more productive. I walk into the office charged up and ready to take on the day.
Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time here? I remember the first WOD I was able to RX – 12 min AMRAP of 9 cleans, 9 push presses, and 9 burpees. I was ecstatic! I called my Mom immediately after to tell her.
Favorite WOD/ Least Favorite WOD: DT would be my favorite so far, Fran is my least favorite.
Favorite Lift/ Least Favorite Lift: Back squats are so much fun. Happiness and joy on a bar, they’ve always been my favorite. My least favorite is probably the sumo deadlift high pull – I never feel like I have the barbell completely balanced.
What advice do you have for people just getting started? Show up, don’t think about the workout, don’t even bother looking it up, just come. We are powerful beyond belief- it just takes the courage to make the first move and a little more to do it again and again. Also colorful outfits – bright pants give you superpowers 😉
Something no one at the gym knows about you: I’m a US and French citizen.
What was the most awkward/embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you during a workout? Ugh, I cried in the middle of a workout! It was a WOD that included running and I was pissed I wasn’t able to run like I used to. I was mortified when the tears started. I’m not sure if my classmates even noticed but for my last lap around the block, the entire class ran with me. By the time we made it back downstairs, with the incredible support I received, the tears were gone and I felt so much better.
When you’re not at Solace, where are we most likely to find you? At home, snuggling with my dog.
Pre and post workout meal of choice? Mmm, does coffee count as a pre workout meal? I usually have a banana after my workouts.
