MEMBER OF THE MONTH – HOWIE ARKINSeptember 21, 2016 4:46 pm
We, the Solace coaching staff, are very excited to award our September 2016 Member of the Month to Howie Arkin. Howie was one of the first members at Solace and remains to be a constant in the community. Up before the rest of the world, Howie is always a positive force in the 6am class, encouraging others to do their best without detracting from the effort he puts into his workouts. Besides daily WODS at Solace, Howie is a big golfer. Training at Solace has helped Howie add strength and flexibility not only to his lifts but to his golf game, contributing to a near victory in his annual club championship this past summer.
Coach Novak says it best when talking about Howie’s commitment to hard work and improving. “When I met Howard, he could barely hold a PVC overhead on straight arms and all he wanted to know was, How do I get better? Since then, every morning he is up while the word is still asleep. He gets in early to work on his mobility before class, gives his best effort in class then continues to work on his mobility once class ends. I have never once heard a word of complaint about a workout, never heard him say that something was too difficult, and have never seen him without being given a hearty good morning. His positivity and encouragement are infectious, but more than anything it’s his hard work. It would have been easy to say I want to be more mobile but not put in the work. It would have been easy to say I don’t have time. It would have been easy to say I am too old. It would be easy to continually scale workouts and be happy just showing up. But Howard has dedicated himself to getting better every day. More than his words, more than his smile, it is his actions that inspire me.”
Howie shows up every day with a smile on his face, with a kind word for everyone and WORKS. It’s not one of those things, but all of them together that make Howard the type of member and human being we should all aspire to be. Tell us a little bit about yourself? I love to work out! When I’m not in the gym, I play a lot of golf and mostly work.
How long have you been doing CrossFit and how did you get into it? How long has Solace been open? I think I was the 4thmember, Jim? So almost 2 years.
What were your thoughts after your first CF workout? I have been working out for 30 years and I was shocked by how weak I was!
What were your goals when joining CrossFit? Better flexibility, loss some weight and hit a golf ball much further
How did you find Solace and what has kept you with us for so long? I work in the same building and watched it being built.
You’ve improved tremendously since starting with us. Talk to us about that and what got and kept you motivated. I LOVE the people! The people in the 6am and the GREAT coaches keep it interesting
What has been the biggest obstacle in your journey? I have a very bad back, which limits my flexibility and my ability to go heavy. It can be frustrating.
What do you feel has been your biggest improvement? My core is much stronger. My chest to bars, my squats, all the lifting movements are much better (Thanks Coach Nick!!!).
Do you have any special memories/achievements during your time here? I have won 2 golf tournaments since joining thanks to CrossFit!
Favorite WOD/ least favorite WOD: Love any team WOD, HATE any overhead squat WOD
Favorite lift/ least favorite lift: Except for overhead squats, I love it all!
How has Solace positively affected you in your personal and professional life? To workout, compete and support a group all at once has helped me transfer those skills to other parts of my life.
What advice do you have for people just getting started? Start slowly and learn the movements properly. The better and you can Crossfit for a long time.
Something no one at the gym knows about you: I used to have blond hair!
When you’re not at Solace, where are we most likely to find you? My golf course 🙂
Pre and post workout meal of choice? Just a cup of coffee.
