Foundations

Our Foundations program is for those with no prior CrossFit experience who are ready to get started in a group setting. It is a prerequisite for taking CrossFit classes. Foundational CrossFit movements will be covered in addition to specific lecture material. Emphasis will be placed on correct and safe movement patterns and scaling options so that newcomers feel prepared to join CrossFit classes with confidence.

Jim was introduced to CrossFit at a young age through his relationship with the renowned Navy Seal Michael Murphy, aka “Murph.” He grew up playing travel ice hockey, baseball, basketball, and lacrosse, and has also received a black belt in taekwondo. Before jumping headlong into the CrossFit world, Jim worked at a boutique investment bank on a High Yield trading desk. Jim loves CrossFit with a bleeding passion, and has been coaching since 2012.

Chad McDonald

Chad served as an Infantry Sergeant in the United States Army from 2004-2009. During his military service he completed two year-long deployments with the 101st Airborne Division (Screaming Eagles) in Iraq and Afghanistan.  He led and mentored soldiers in military and physical training as well as operations as a combat team leader. Since 2011, he has worked fulltime in investment banking and renewable energy project finance.

Nicholas Novak

As the son of a Greco Roman wrestler and a bodybuilder- both US Marines – sport and movement have been a part of Nick’s life since birth. But it was within the concrete walls of a Crossfit box Nick found the community and knowledge he hadn’t even known he was missing and was introduced to what would become his greatest love: Olympic Weightlifting.

Nick embraces differences and unique styles of weightlifting and believes that by sharing ideas and testing them in the lab – the gym – we can all become better weightlifters and better athletes.  If he’s not on the platform or in the yoga studio he can be found soaking in the sunlight with his French bulldog, Bruno or discussing existential philosophy with anyone willing to engage.

Wolf has earned the prestigious Starting Strength Coach certification, and is a member of the coaching staff at Mark Rippetoe’s Starting Strength Seminars, where he coaches personal trainers, CrossFit coaches, and Strength and Conditioning Coaches in the Squat, Bench Press, Deadlift, and Press. Wolf brings years of strength and barbell expertise, professionalism, and raw power to the Solace team as Head Coach of the Strength program.

Dave Durante

Dave Durante is a multiple time USA gymnastics national champion and 2008 Beijing Olympic Team alternate. Lead coach with the CrossFit Gymnastics L1 course from 2013-2015, Durante developed the CrossFit Gymnastics Advanced Course. He is co-owner of Power Monkey Fitness which is dedicated to bringing gymnastics education, equipment, and events to the fitness world. Gymnastics is his life passion and his goal is to bring proper understanding, technique, and progression to people all over the world.

Andrew Mariani

Andrew Mariani from central New Jersey. Lifelong athlete in multiple sports, ended up choosing to play lacrosse in college, where I enjoyed success at the national level going  to the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III men’s lacrosse tournament twice and finishing in the top ten 3 times. I’ve been coaching since college where I worked with my lacrosse team’s strength and conditioning coach on training programs for his personal training clients. Using my experience as a collegiate athlete I leveraged that to work with local teams upon coming back home after graduation. For instance, each of the last three seasons I have worked with Stevens Institute of Technology’s wrestling team as well as coaching HIIT classes at Intrepid Gym in Hoboken. Additionally, I work as a personal trainer for Focus Integrated Training.

She believes that the path to our best version is to flip that sneaky mental narrative when the workouts go dark and stormy.

‘There is always one more rep that is possible,’ and Heidi believes that when you subscribe to that, all of our self-imposed limitations literally get annihilated.

Heidi is no stranger to that deep mental push.  She has been a runner since she was 9 years old, running competitively through a Division 1 college to completing more than 20 marathons, including multiple trips to the Boston marathon and ultimately into ultra marathoning.

She has been CrossFitting since 2012 and loves how the sport, to her, mimics the intensity of her college workouts.  Her personal mantra is ‘what would you do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?’

Dariel Cepeda

Dariel has been fascinated with fitness ever since he was a kid. He first learned about CrossFit while working in a conventional gym and his first CrossFit work out was Fran (21-15-9 thrusters and pull ups). It took him about 12 minutes. All those years he had been working out to “look” fit, but once he began CrossFit, he became actually fit, and the look followed.

Dariel is experienced in working with athletes of all fitness levels with goals that vary from improving strength, increasing cardiovascular output, and losing weight. He also is well versed in working with clients with back, knee, and shoulder pain or who have recently recovered from surgeries on those aforementioned areas.

His passion is in making you better and helping you reach goals you never knew you could attain.

Nick loves interacting with people. Whether he’s teaching a beginner on how to do a proper bodyweight squat, or talking in front of hundreds of people as a Progenex sales executive at his day-job, human interaction is his passion. Growing up with a father who was a three-sport prep school coach in Connecticut, Nick’s love of sports was carved out at an early age. Later on, Nick always quickly became bored of his workouts (he’s a Sagittarius; they always need a challenge), until he found CrossFit in 2011, and has never looked back.
