We, the Solace coaching staff, are very excited to award our March Member of the Month to Helen Cho. Helen always has a positive attitude and continues to improve every day in class. Her energy and support for her fellow classmates always shines through, whether she is taking Crossfit, Body, Sculpt or Yoga. Alongside the physical benefits, Helen continues to use fitness to break out of her comfort soon and try new things. This year, she spontaneously signed up for the Olympic Lifting Mock Meet, without knowing much about it. With a little help from Coach Novak, Helen overcame her fears and gained a new confidence she didn’t realize she had, and now has started taking barbell classes regularly.

From the entire community and staff at Solace, it is an honor to have you apart of this community and we want to thank you for being a role model for all of us. So what are you waiting for?! Keep reading to learn more about our March Member of the Month!

Member of the Month
Name: Helen Cho
Hometown: Queens, NY
Age: Ask me in person! I would love to chat ☺
Occupation: Ask me in person! I would love to chat! ☺

How long have you been doing Crossfit and how did you get into it? I have been doing Crossfit for almost 5 years now. WOW! Time flies! I heard about Crossfit through friends and joined using a Groupon deal. Thank you Groupon!

What were your thoughts after your first CF workout? What did I get myself into?

What were your goals when joining Crossfit? I love trying new things so I gave Crossfit a try without much thought.  Prior to Crossfit, working out for me was burning calories, getting sweaty and riding the high of my endorphins after.  However, after joining Crossfit, I developed goals and gained a new found motivation to improve myself by getting stronger through Crossfit. Yay!

How did you find Solace and what has kept you with us for so long? I found Solace through Coach Hayden. This is my first year with Solace so I don’t think I can fairly answer the second question yet. Ask me next year ☺

You’ve improved tremendously since starting with us. Talk to us about that and what got and kept you motivated. What or who was the biggest motivator/inspiration? What has been the most challenging part of your journey? Biggest obstacles?
I am so thankful that I have this sweet spot for fitness and through this amazing fitness journey, I was able to find Crossfit.  So exciting! This gift of fitness has healed me in so many ways and it also saved my life.  I am so grateful for fitness!  If fitness were a man…I would marry him! Wink wink! Okay, getting serious now…In every workout, I find inspiration in the people I work out with. I love to see my peers giving their all.  I find it to be very beautiful because I absorb that enchanting energy and it fuels my fire.  I would also like to share that the most important motivation and inspiration comes from within me – I do this for me. The most challenging part of my journey has been me getting in the way of myself at times.  It happens and when it does I pick myself back up and march forward with my head up.  No one else is going to do it for me.

What changes have you made to your daily life, diet & workout routine that have been the most successful for you? I wasn’t eating much protein in the form of meat.  I recently incorporated a lot more meat into my diet.  I’m also drinking SFH protein powder with water and my favorite flavor is the natural flavor.

How has Solace positively affected you both inside and outside the gym? Solace has allowed me to discover new things. I recently participated in the Oly Mock Meet, which was a pretty spontaneous and exhilarating new thing for me.  Prior to the mock meet, I had never had the opportunity to speak to Coach Nick and he was incredibly kind and supportive.  That experience encouraged me to start taking the barbell classes at Solace. I am also so in love with SQUADWOD, which was created by our very own Coach Heidi (I love you Coach Heidi!).  It has been precious to be a part of these monthly events that continue to reinforce the genuine beauty of being a woman in the most uplifting way.  SQUADWOD has been the sparkling emerald of my year. Thanks Solace!

What keeps you motivated? What keeps me motivated is me.  I know very well that motivation and happiness doesn’t just fall from the tree and land on my lap while I sip ice tea.  I have to work at it every day and I work hard because my happiness is important to me.

Biggest achievement at Solace so far? Recently, I completed Karen using a 14lb wall ball for the first time in my life.  Prior, I used the 8lb wall ball so the increase is a huge deal for me.  Yay!

New goal for the coming year? To be a better me and be in the best shape ever! So excited for meeee!

Something no one at the gym knows about you I was born in Virginia and I love cheddar biscuits.

When you’re not at Solace, where are we most likely to find you? At work…there are only so many hours in the day.

Pre and post workout meal of choice? My pre workout meal of choice is a cookie.  I’m always snacking on something yummy.  YOLO. And my post workout meal of choice is definitely a cheeseburger with the crispy crinkle fries.  A good cheeseburger saves the day!

Favorite WOD/ least favorite WOD?
My favorite WOD is MURPH. I love hero WODS.  It brings people together to commemorate in a positive and healthy way.  And I don’t have a least favorite WOD.

Favorite lift/ least favorite lift? My favorite lifts are power cleans. I love the power behind the movement And my least favorite are snatches.  I got snatch issues…this one is a work in progress.

Advice for someone looking to start CrossFit? Avoid overthinking it.  Nike said it best, JUST DO IT.

Knowing how far you’ve come, if you could give your past self-advice, what would it be? Enjoy every moment with intensity because they only happen once.  That’s the beauty of it so don’t miss out on those beautiful moments!
